Jack Nicklaus' Masters Invitation To Ben Hogan: Signed By Jack Nicklaus in 1986 jack nicklaus turned 46 years old; with the passing of time the golden bears game had gone into hibernation, with little indication of a return to past glory. prior to the masters tournament, a newspaper column indicated jack was done, washed up, through and gave him no chance of winning the tournament. although it was hard for him to argue with the analysis, his pride would not allow him to accept it. for the first two days of the tournament jack fought a balky putter but managed to stay within striking distance of the leaders; he knew if he could drop some putts he could be a factor. after a saturday 69, jack was 4 strokes back and still hanging on. throughout his career, jack had a knack for correctly predicting the score he would need to shoot on sunday in order to win. on this day, he predicted a 65 would get the job done. jack got off to a slow start; he birdied 9 and 11, but it was a bogey at 12 that he would later say really got me going. suddenly, his putting touch returned, he made birdies at 13, 16, and 17 to go along with an incredible eagle at the 15th. with a blistering 30 on the back nine, jack carded a 65; the magic number. jack nicklaus had won his 6th masters at the age of 46, his 18th and final professional major championship 24 years after his first. the following spring, jack sent this personal letter to ben hogan inviting him to attend the annual champions dinner. each year, the champions dinner is held the tuesday evening of tournament week and hosted by the reigning champion. the tradition of the champions dinner was started in 1952 by ben hogan who hosted that year. being a masters champion is one of the most exclusive fraternities in the world; to be a multiple major championship winner and to have your career woven into the fabric of golf history is something only men like nicklaus and hogan can comprehend.... golfspast.com
